La Paz: La Tranquera

Thinking my colleagues from the university would find it interesting, I pull out my book about indigenous political movements in Bolivia. Their reaction betrays how threatened Bolivians of European descent feel. In Canada we can be more generous to First Nations people because they are so marginal in our society.

It is said that an alpaca separated from the herd will die of loneliness.

The two Australian women tell me that the Aymara painted all the Christian art in the Iglesia San Francisco but that indigenous iconography was incorporated. For example, the image of a raven represents doubt. It reminds me of Goya’s portraits of the aristocracy where he made them look foolish but their own vanity prevented them from seeing it.
